Need for Qur’ans in Prison

noble_poc_28_m.jpg

Muslim chaplains are always on the search for donated Qur’ans.

I’m sure that donated Qur’ans are plentiful in some areas of the country, but I do not believe that it is the case in the majority of US prisons.

Incarcerated Muslims constantly ask the chaplains for a Qur’an.  And of course, the new Muslim should be given one as a gift when they say the Shahadah.

Non-Muslims interested in Islam also ask for Qur’ans.

Christians ensure that Bibles, for example, are everywhere.  One can find a Bible in the drawer of practically every hotel and motel in the United States.  Bibles are also plentiful in prison and any inmate who wants one can easily obtain a copy.

Of course, the incarcerated Muslim can buy a Qur’an from an outside source.  However, many Muslims in prison do not have big balances on their “books”.  The average prison job at my facility, for example, pays 18 cents an hour!  Inmates must buy their “personals” (soap, shampoo, deodorant, etc.) as well as other commissary items (snacks, cigarettes {I know!} cards, etc.)  While some inmates have families and friends on the outside who send them money, the majority of the inmates do not have this luxury.

Muslims need to ensure that there is a plentiful supply of Qur’ans in our prisons in the US.

How can you help?

1.  If you know of a resource for obtaining Qur’ans, please let me know by dropping me a line at amirahmusings@gmail.com

2.  Buy Qur’ans and donate them to your local prison or jail.  Contact the chaplain at the facility to find out how to donate books and literature.  Most prisons require books and literature to be shipped to the prison directly from the bookstore or publisher.

3.  Talk to the Muslims at your masjid or MSA (Muslim Student Association).  Tell them of the need for Qur’ans in prison.  I have found this strategy very effective around Ramadhan and Eid :)
