اجيب Ajeeb! Questions Asked by Muslimahs in Prison

Some of the questions may surprise you; others may not …

Muslim chaplains have their own agenda for the work they do in prison, but the needs and desires of those they serve often drive the ministry.  Incarcerated Muslimahs have limited access to resources, so I write down their questions and then go on the search for daleel (proof with correct sources).  Sometimes it’s a challenge!

I will add to this page as the questions are asked.  Answers will be forthcoming, Insha Allah.  If I provide incorrect information, please let me know!

1.  Is oral sex permitted in Islam?

2.  Can a Muslim woman marry a non-Muslim man?

3.  What is sexually permissible in Islam?

4.  What will happen to my non-Muslim relatives and friends?  Will they have a chance to go to Jannah?

5.  Can I touch the Qur’an when I am menstruating if it is not an Arabic version?

6.  Can I recite Qur’an when I am menstruating?

7.  Can Muslim women have dreadlocks?

    Oneness, Uniqueness of Allah (Tawheed)
    Bukhari :: Book 9 :: Volume 93 :: Hadith 639
    Narrated ‘Aisha:

    The Prophet used to recite the Quran with his head in my lap while I used to be in my periods (having menses).

    Menstrual Periods
    Bukhari :: Book 1 :: Volume 6 :: Hadith 301
    Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:

    Once Allah’s Apostle went out to the Musalla (to offer the prayer) o ‘Id-al-Adha or Al-Fitr prayer. Then he passed by the women and said, “O women! Give alms, as I have seen that the majority of the dwellers of Hell-fire were you (women).” They asked, “Why is it so, O Allah’s Apostle ?” He replied, “You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you. A cautious sensible man could be led astray by some of you.” The women asked, “O Allah’s Apostle! What is deficient in our intelligence and religion?” He said, “Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?” They replied in the affirmative. He said, “This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Isn’t it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?” The women replied in the affirmative. He said, “This is the deficiency in her religion.”

    Here are some concerning menses, I shall add more insha Allah

    Purification (Kitab Al-Taharah)
    Dawud :: Book 1 : Hadith 287
    Narrated Hamnah daughter of Jahsh:

    Hamnah said my menstruation was great in quantity and severe. So I came to the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) for a decision and told him. I found him in the house of my sister, Zaynab, daughter of Jahsh.
    This one is for the sisters who have extreme menses, I am just addidng these as there may be of some use, insha Allah, I shall find the one concerning Al QUran, insha Allh, I am certain this will help :) _
    I said: Apostle of Allah, I am a woman who menstruates in great quantity and it is severe, so what do you think about it? It has prevented me from praying and fasting.

    He said: I suggest that you should use cotton, for it absorbs the blood. She replied: It is too copious for that. He said: Then take a cloth. She replied: It is too copious for that, for my blood keeps flowing. The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said: I shall give you two commands; whichever of them you follow, that will be sufficient for you without the other, but you know best whether you are strong enough to follow both of them.

    He added: This is a stroke of the Devil, so observe your menses for six or seven days, Allah alone knows which it should be; then wash. And when you see that you are purified and quite clean, pray during twenty-three or twenty-four days and nights and fast, for that will be enough for you, and do so every month, just as women menstruate and are purified at the time of their menstruation and their purification.

    But if you are strong enough to delay the noon (Zuhr) prayer and advance the afternoon (‘Asr) prayer, to wash, and then combine the noon and the afternoon prayer; to delay the sunset prayer and advance the night prayer, to wash, and then combine the two prayers, do so: and to wash at dawn, do so: and fast if you are able to do so if possible;

    The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said: Of the two commands this is more to my liking.

    The hadith below states that a woman can perform hajj, but cannot do tawaf, because she is unclean, A woman cannot perform salat until she finishes her menses, some say that a woman can touch the quran, while many say that she cannot. I am one who uses my mind and leaves off doubtful matteees, if we cannt recite it due to menses, then I do not touch it, Allahu Alim. In order to recite the Quran you must perform wudu ,one cannot do so when they have menses, unless it is beyond the normal time for your menses as stated in the above ahadith. I am no scholar, I just read and adhere to what my Lord swt says, insha Allah. Only the clean can touch the quran and a woman is not clean when she is Jundub nor when she is on her menses, we are always pure because a Muslim never becomes impure, but we are not clean. I respect the Quran and I stay away from that which is doubtful, if I cannot do other acts of worship such as salat and sawm, thenIHajj
    Malik :: Book 20 : Hadith 20.70.233
    Yahya related to me from Malik from Abd ar-Rahman ibn al-Qasim from his father that A’isha said, “I came to Makka at the time of my period so I did not do tawaf of the House or go between Safa and Marwa. I complained to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he said, ‘Do what the people doing hajj do except do not do tawaf of the House and go between Safa and Marwa until you are pure.’ ”

    Malik said, concerning a woman who entered ihram for umra at the time of hajj, and she arrived in Makka during her period and so could not do tawaf of the House, “When she fears that the time (for hajj) is getting close, she gets into ihram for the hajj and sacrifices an animal. She is like someone who combines the hajj and the umra. One tawaf is enough for her. If a women starts her period after she has already done tawaf of the House and prayed, she does say between Safa and Marwa and stops at Arafa and Muzdalifa and stones the jamras but she does not do the tawaf al-ifada until she is pure and has finished her menses.”

    shall respect my Lord’s swt speech and not touch the QUran, Allahu Alim.

    Purity
    Malik :: Book 2 : Hadith 2.18.69
    Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father from A’isha, umm al-muminin, that whenever the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, did ghusl for major ritual impurity, he would begin by washing his hands, and then do wudu as for prayer. He would then put his fingers in the water and rub the roots of his hair with them. Then he would pour as much water as two hands can hold on to his head three times, and over the entire surface of his skin
    The abovehadith states that one should allow the water to touch their scalp, insha Allah. Many say that dreads are haram as long as the hair touches the scalp, you are in wudu, some would undo their braids for wudu, while some of the companions would not.

    Dress
    Bukhari :: Book 7 :: Volume 72 :: Hadith 796
    Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar :

    I heard ‘Umar saying, “Whoever braids his hair should shave it (on finishing lhram). You’d better not do, something like Talbid.” Ibn Umar used to say: “I saw Allah’s Apostle with his hair stuck together with gum.”
    Military Expeditions led by the Prophet (pbuh) (Al-Maghaazi)
    Bukhari :: Book 5 :: Volume 59 :: Hadith 434
    Narrated Ikrima bin Khalid:

    Ibn ‘Umar said, “I went to Hafsa while water was dribbling from her twined braids. I said, ‘The condition of the people is as you see, and no authority has been given to me.’ Hafsa said, (to me), ‘Go to them, and as they (i.e. the people) are waiting for you, and I am afraid your absence from them will produce division amongst them.’ ” So Hafsa did not leave Ibn ‘Umar till we went to them. When the people differed. Muawiya addressed the people saying, “‘If anybody wants to say anything in this matter of the Caliphate, he should show up and not conceal himself, for we are more rightful to be a Caliph than he and his father.” On that, Habib bin Masalama said (to Ibn ‘Umar), “Why don’t you reply to him (i.e. Muawiya)?” ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar said, “I untied my garment that was going round my back and legs while I was sitting and was about to say, ‘He who fought against you and against your father for the sake of Islam, is more rightful to be a Caliph,’ but I was afraid that my statement might produce differences amongst the people and cause bloodshed, and my statement might be interpreted not as I intended. (So I kept quiet) remembering what Allah has prepared in the Gardens of Paradise (for those who are patient and prefer the Hereafter to this worldly life).” Habib said, “You did what kept you safe and secure (i.e. you were wise in doing so).”
