As Salaamu Alaikum!

I am a contracted female Muslim chaplain serving Allah (swt) in a state prison for women.

I am also a volunteer visiting Muslim chaplain in a state prison for women in my neighboring state.

It is my dua that Allah (swt) deems this blog as for the good of incarcerated Muslimahs.  Women in prison are often forgotten.  Muslim women in prison are the most forgotten.

Incarcerated Muslimahs are often seen as the worst amongst us in our Ummah.  Incarcerated Muslimahs go against everything the stereotype Muslim woman is supposed to embody.  But please do not be quick to judge.  Insha Allah you will get to know them here, and will learn of their needs.  Remember that the majority of these sisters will be released some day, and will be returning to our communities and masjids.

They need us.  We need them.

A majority of our incarcerated Muslimahs are mothers.  If we remember the words of our Messenger (saw), “Paradise lies at the feet of the mother,” we will understand the critical need to help Muslimahs in prison.

Muslimahs in prison are also our grandmothers, mothers, aunties, sisters, wives, nieces …

My name, my institution name, their names … are not important at this time.  What is important is that there is a forum for their voices and needs to be heard.

If you have a burning need to contact me or need additional information, I may be reached at AmirahMusings@gmail.com

  1. sister my name is tasneem im a house wife i stay in dubai i would love to help in anyway i can plz feel free to contact me .

  2. My cousin is incarcerated in an Ohio prison and asked me to get a list of people that he can write to. The problem is that he is not on line and so he would prefer to write to someone. Is there a way to obtain a list of addresses or PO boxes of muslims that he can write to?

  3. Dear AFM74:

Perhaps you can help him by finding out what masjid is near the institution where he is incarcerated. Then contact the imam of that masjid. You could also call the chaplain of his facility (he is Muslim?). Sometimes prisons have “pen pal” programs of people who are willing to write to inmates. If your cousin is a Muslim, he should only be writing to men, not women :)

If you have further questions, leave them here and I will try to help, Insha Allah. Please let me know how you make out.

  4. As Salaamu Alaikum Tasneemkola:

Jazaka Allahu Khayr for your offer. I will let you know, Insha Allaah, if we need help.

Salaamu Alaikum Ukhti Tasneem, you may want to write to a prison or call to see who is the person in charge or the religious activities, i.e. chaplains name. You may be able to give a p.o. box address to the chaplain and inform them that you are interested in becoming a pen pal to those who are interested within the muslim population. Maybe get some brothers to write the brothers and some sisters to write the sisters, insha Allah. They are really in need of an outlet, because many are unaware that there are good Muslims behind bars until they find themselves there. I pray that we can all reach out to those who are incarceraated and be brothers, ameen. fee aman Allah, salamu alaikum :)
